Milk Halwa / Dudh no Halwo
Dudh no Halwo aka Milk Halwa is a sheer milky indulgence! I grew up eating this Halwa. My dad used to bring it from this halwai/sweet shop in Ahmedabad(my hometown) every so often. After moving to USA, whenever someone is coming from India, I would always request them to get Milk Halwa for me and my family and we would devour this sweetest treat.
A few years ago, I was talking to one of my friends about my craving for Halwa and how I was disappointed that no one was visiting from my hometown any time soon. She said no worries as she knows the perfect recipe that takes less than 30 minutes. Trust me I was skeptical at first, but I was floored when she showed me how to make it!! How can you get the same taste in less than 30 minutes where halwais take hours to make it! If I had not seen her making it myself, I would not have believed it. We’re ever thankful to my friend who showed me the shortcut recipe and now we can have the milk Halwa anytime we want it. This halwa is made with only 5 ingredients and its a one pot wonder!
To make Halwa traditionally, you need to boil the milk until it’s reduced by 1/3, then add mawa aka khoya and sugar and further cook it until the desired consistency. All of that hard work is not necessary now.
The shortcut is using ricotta cheese! Add milk powder, sugar and butter to the ricotta cheese and cook for 3-4 minutes of intervals in microwave. After each interval, mix it up well and cook again for 3-4 minutes. Repeat this process until you get the golden-brown color and all moisture dry up. Garnish it with some almond slivers and your Halwa is ready. Indulge yourself!!

Enjoy.
- I have used Shoprite brand instant nonfat dry Milk powder. You can use the milk powder on your hand.
- I like Polio Whole milk Ricotta cheese. I’m sure you can use low fat ricotta cheese to cut down the calories.

Oh my! this looks absolutely heavenly. Love it when people bring food from home, knowing it’s such a big effort. I’m Malaysian so my mother till this day, still brings special cookies from home that I can’t get in Australia.
Thanks Amy. Doesn’t it look heavenly? The sweets from back home brings you a little closer to the home!
