Churros

Homemade Churros for Cinco de Mayo!! Churros are one of the most recognizable and classic Mexican desserts. A churro is a deep fried dough pastry dessert which can be eaten at anytime, breakfast, lunch or dinner. I first ate churros when we went to Mexico for vacation. One of the desserts I had was warm and fresh churro served with vanilla ice cream, and I enjoyed it thoroughly! After that trip whenever we go to any Mexican restaurant for dinner, my choice of dessert is churros! Churros also make for a really good snack. Surprisingly, Costco makes some really good churros! Trust me, I used to always snack on them while shopping at Costco!

With Cinco de Mayo coming up, I wanted to get into the festive spirit by making churro at home! Churros are best when they are made fresh from scratch and they are incredibly easy to make. They turned out crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They taste awesome served with some Nutella or chocolate sauce or dolce de leche sauce. You can just dip each bite or even stuff the churros with Nutella. The churros are ready to party in your mouth!! 🤤🤤

Notes:

Use a candy thermometer for the oil to monitor the proper temperature. Preheat oil while you make the dough.

Use a closed star tip nozzle and make sure its large or extra large nozzle tip to pipe the churros in order to get the right sized churros as you get at restaurants.

Use room temperature eggs. Some recipes use 3 or 4 eggs but I feel that the churros come out very eggy. Eggs are necessary as eggs gives dough the rise and flavor. Let the dough cool down before you add eggs otherwise eggs will be scrambled. Add one egg at a time. Mix it up well until the mixture comes together and is smooth. It will be separate at first but it will come together. Just keep mixing it.

Please fry the churros on medium heat and make sure you fry them till they are golden brown on each side. This will give crispy exterior and tender inside.

Let the churros drain on paper towels before you coat them with cinnamon and sugar mixture. You don’t want them too oily but at the same time you don’t want them too dry. Otherwise, the cinnamon sugar won’t coat properly.

Serve warm. You can serve with nutella, chocolate sauce or caramel sauce for dipping. Even better, Serve warm with cold scoop of ice ice cream for mouthwatering dessert.
